Cover Your Assets from Grandpa Beck’s Games is a card game for 2-6 players ages 7that plays in 20-40 minutes. I was first introduced to Cover Your Assets at a friend’s wedding. They used different games as their centerpieces, allowing guest’s to play while waiting for the festivities! In Cover Your Assets, players are fighting to become the first millionaire at the table by collecting sets of asset cards. Players will pile their assets in front of them but need to be careful because any exposed assets may be stolen by another player!

What’s In the Box?

  • Deck of Asset Cards
  • Rule Book
  • A recipe card from Grandma Beck

Setup

Setup for Cover Your Assets depends on how many players are at the table and whether you are using the advanced rules. For this play through we will be assuming there are 4-6 players at the table, using the standard ruleset. Remove the Swap, Move and Penny Jar cards from the deck. These cards are only used with the advanced ruleset. Shuffle all remaining cards together and deal 5 cards to each player. The remaining cards in the deck go in the center of a table and one card is flipped over to start the discard pile. You are now ready to play Cover Your Assets.

Gameplay

Gameplay for Cover Your Assets begins with the player to the left of the dealer. On a player’s turn they must form a set, discard cards, or challenge. To form a set, players must pair two identical cards together (or one asset card and one wild card), either from their hand or by picking up a card from the discard pile. Once a player has a pair they will put the cards in front of them. Different sets of the same type of assets must remain separate. Do not combine them into a single pile. In addition, you will stack assets alternating between placing the cards horizontal and vertical. To discard, a player will take one card from their hard and place it face up on the discard pile. To challenge, or attempt to steal, a player will place a matching card, or a wild card, in front of the player they are challenging. The challenged player may either play a matching asset or wild to defend or choose to forfeit. This back and forth continues until one of the players can no longer challenge or defend the asset, in which case the wining player takes all of the cards used in the battle and places the assets, with wilds underneath, at the top of their asset pile. At the end of a player’s turn, they draw back up to 5 cards in their hand from the draw pile.

Cover Your Assets plays in rounds. Play will continue until every player has used all of their remaining cards. Players cannot skip a turn. If a player cannot form a set or challenge, they must take the discard action. Players add up the dollar amount of their assets at the end of each round.

Objective

In classic Cover Your Assets, players are competing to become millionaires by collecting the most assets throughout the game. The player that earns $1 million in assets first is the winner of the game! Players have the option to play with variant rules as well. These rules call for the end of the game in different ways such as the player with the highest score at the end of the first round is the winner or the highest score after 3 rounds or the first player to win 2 rounds.

Final Thoughts

Cover Your Assets is an excellent small box game that offers a lot of replay value! We have played it will all adult players, children and up to 3 different generations at the table. The rules are simple enough for non gamers to jump in too! Stealing and defending is by far the most fun part of Cover Your Assets. You never know what another player has in their hand! They may have matching assets or a stack of wild cards! This part of the game has always lead to big laughs at our table. Grandpa Beck’s Games are known for bringing players of all ages to the table for some fun, and Cover Your Assets is no exception.
