Patchwork Express from Lookout Games is a 2 player version of their popular Patchwork Game. It is designed for players 6+ and plays in about 10 minutes, allowing for multiple plays per game session if you’d like. Players work to sew together a tapestry of fabric to make a detailed quilt.

What’s In the Box?

Patchwork Express consists of:

  • 1 Time Board
  • 2 Quilt Boards
  • 2 Time Tokens
  • 1 Neutral Token
  • 8 Blue Patches
  • 15 Colorful Patches
  • 6 Leather Patchers
  • A variety of Button Tiles.

Setup

To setup Patchwork Express, place the Time Board in the center of the table. Each player starts with a Quilt Board, Time Token and 5 Buttons. Time Tokens are placed at the starting place on the Time Board (the space with an A on it). Create a circle of the 15 Colorful Patches around the Time Board. The Neutral Token gets placed between the smallest Colorful Patch (a size of 3 squares) and the Colorful Patch next to it in the circle. Finally, place the 6 Leather Patches on the marked spaces on the Time Board. Set up is now complete!

A game of Patchwork Express is set up on a wooden table. The board in the front of the frame shows patchwork pieces and buttons on it. In the center shows at board with two meeples and yellow and green arrows. In the background multiple shapes of patchwork are ready to be played.

Gameplay

To play Patchwork Express, players take turns either Advancing to Receive Buttons or Take and Place a Patch. To Advance, a player moves their Time Token in front of the other players and receives 1 Button for each space they move. To Take and Place a Patch players may choose a Colorful Patch that is from the 3 Colorful Patches in front of the Neutral Token, in a clockwise order. Then the player Moves the Neutral Token in front of the chosen Colorful Patch and pays for the Colorful Patch in Buttons. Each Colorful Patch has the number of Buttons it costs on it. The player then places the Colorful Patch on their Quilt Board and moves their Time Token the indicated number of spaces noted on the Colorful Patch. If a player passes a Leather Patch, they must pick it up and place it on their Quilt Board. The player must advance their Time Token, regardless of which action they chose. Once there are only 5 Colorful Patches left, the Blue Patches come into play by being placed behind the Neutral Token. Gameplay continues as before until both players reach the last space on the Time Board (marked with the letter Z).

Objective

The objective of Patchwork Express is to end the game with the most points. Players are placing Colorful Patches of different shapes on their Quilt Board, trying to cover as much of the board as possible. Points are calculated at the end of the game by counting the remaining number of Buttons a player has and subtracting 2 points for every empty square on their Quilt Board.

The patchwork game board is in the middle of a wooden table with various shaped patchwork pieces around it. A yellow and green meeple are at the starting square.

Final Thoughts

Patchwork Express is a great 2 player game for when you are short on time. Playing in about 10 minutes, it allows for a little relaxation and a chance to unwind with a lightweight board game. The box is fairly small, allowing for ease of travel. It is also a good choice to play with children or adults that don’t consider themselves gamers.
